HISTORY

The first units were built in 1961 by the family who still own it today. Since then Hananui has continued to grow with the addition of the waterfront block then in later years the Apartments on Church St. Originally the site of the Pacific Hotel, Hananui’s site has always held a place in Russell for hospitality.

Hananui got its name from a whaling ship from Stewart Island, which was named after the highest mountain there, Mt Hananui (Anglem). The ship sadly ran aground in 1943 in Ryans Beach, Otago Peninsula and she still resides there today.

Today Hananui Lodge features 10 units across the site with a variety of sea views and layouts, from studios, one bedrooms and two bedrooms.

Hananui Apartments, which is set back from the main street, features 5 spacious apartments with garage parking and a variety of studios, one bedrooms and a two bedroom apartment. With these apartments being back a street they do not offer any sea views, but do however have air conditioners/heat pumps.
